Art Time for Toddlers

Toddlers learn when they create art. They develop “fine motor skills” by learning how to move and control little fingers. They develop confidence when you praise and display their work. Early childhood education experts suggest, when introducing a young child to art, that you avoid  telling your toddler what to create or helping “complete” a work of art.

Homemade finger paint can be safer for toddlers with allergies. Combine 1 cup of cornstarch (or white flour) with 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 tablespoon of dish soap. Mix until it’s smooth (no lumps). Then stir in 1/2 cup of hot water, and mix again. Separate what you make into tiny plastic containers, and add a drop of a different food color into each container. If you can’t find a box of food colors in your kitchen cabinet, experiment with drops of squeezed fruits, vegetables and coffee or tea.
