Parents' Corner: Process Praise

Toddlers love to be praised, but praising them for something specific is even more rewarding. Educators report that if you use what early childhood education experts call “process praise,” young children will know what attracts your praise.

When you use process praise, young children are more likely to repeat that good behavior, or try to complete a similar task, in the future. PBS Kids for Parents reports that the difference between praise and process praise can be as simple as saying, “Good job sharing your toys,” instead of just using the words “Good job.”
